MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) Europe got its first point of the afternoon matches when Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker's comeback fell short. It still might be too late.
Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald beat Woods and Stricker 1-up when Stricker's 7-footer for birdie lipped out. But the Americans are ahead 10-5 and will go into Sunday's singles with at least a four-point lead. They need 14 points to regain the Ryder Cup . The largest comeback in Ryder Cup history was at Brookline in 1999, when the U.S. erased a 10-6 deficit on the final day.
Woods and Stricker were dismal in both of their matches Friday and took a while to get going against Garcia and Donald, making the turn at 4 down on Saturday. But Woods finally got it in gear, making five birdies on the back nine, including a 9-foot putt on 16 that won the hole. As the ball dropped in, Woods pointed at the cup.
Woods stuck his tee shot to 4 feet on the par-3 17th only to see Donald do him just a bit better. Garcia had a chance to win the 18th hole and the match with a 21-foot birdie. He examined it for several minutes, lined up but then backed off, drawing jeers. It didn't matter, because he missed.
But Stricker couldn't come through, either, and Europe had only its second point of the day.
